Amy Shuman is in her third year as Director of DISCO. She is currently completing a publication on the connections between the sociolinguistic concept of communicative competence and discourses of normalcy in disability studies. In addition, she serves as chair of the Consumer Advisory Council of the Nisonger Center (a University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities) at Ohio State and is part of the team that developed a post-secondary program (TOPS) for individuals with intellectual disabilities at Ohio State. In addition to her disability studies work, she and Professor Wendy Hesford have created a working group on Human Rights at Ohio State, and they are developing an undergraduate minor in that area. Professor Shuman is the author of two books on narrative and a book on political asylum, co-authored with Carol Bohmer.
